Rondebosch at a glance
Rondebosch is mostly a residential neighbourhood with commercial and business centres. Rondebosch is well-known for its breathtaking vistas of Table Mountain as well as its architectural splendour. There are numerous lovely Victorian residences in Rondebosch, as well as excellent reproductions of Sir Herbert Baker's architecture.
Rondebosch is home to the majority of University of Cape Town students. The campus, which is located on the Devil's Peak slopes, runs up the hills and is a metropolitan icon.
Jan Van Riebeeck gave the very first permanent title to land in Africa in Rondebosch. He named the region after a clump of thorn trees known as 'Het Ronde Doornbosjen,' which became Rondebosch over time (round tree).
